Dr. Maureen Phipps

Maureen G. Phipps, MD, MPH, FACOG, is Professor Emeritus, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Phipps served as the CEO of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (2019-2023) leading ACOG to be the strong, impactful, respected, and influential voice for reproductive health and medicine. With her steadfast commitment to excellence, collaborative spirit and thoughtful leadership, Dr. Phipps led as ACOG faced and worked through incredible challenges including the global COVID-19 pandemic crisis that impacted the lives of every heath care professional and the patients they serve, ongoing social injustices and inequities in obstetrics and gynecology, and the assault on reproductive rights prior to the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision and after. Dr. Phipps also led ACOG through a vital strategic visioning process that set the stage for ACOG’s continued work.
Prior to joining ACOG as CEO, Dr. Phipps served as professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and assistant dean for Teaching and Research in Women’s Health at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She led numerous initiatives at Brown and Women & Infants Hospital and in Rhode Island, including directing the Brown and Women & Infants Hospital National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health and leading the Rhode Island Task Force on Premature Birth. Her research and academic activities involve collaborations across departments, hospitals, and state agencies. Dr. Phipps was the principal investigator or co-investigator for multiple projects and programs funded through the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. Dr. Phipps’ broad interest in women’s health is geared toward improving the health of women and people needing ob-gyn care, their families, and communities with a specific focus on under resourced and vulnerable people. Dr. Phipps’ leadership centers on the core values of integrity, trust, excellence, accountability, and mutual respect along with an unwavering commitment to achieving equity and equitable care.
